We first introduce a notion of non-negative polynomials (NP) and some historical background briefly. Next we consider sums of squares (SOS) polynomials as one of the main certificates for non-negativity and classical results of Hilbert concerning these notions. Recent results on the cone description of NPs and SOS will be also presented.
